The Bros of Mount Olympus

One week into rehearsals for Deus Ex Machina and we’ve already wrapped our second film shoot with our video god Lowell Bartholomee, basked in the glory of a Will Hollis Snider Photography publicity shoot (he sure did make our actors look pretty!!), and got our ecstatic dance on with our lovely Ladies of Choreography, Kelly Hasandras and Robin Grace Thompson. It’s been a busy week. In the midst all of the work, the Deus team has been discovering what it means to bridge a story that is divided, and one that seeks to bridge old and...

Bringing myths to life: The cast of Deus

Rehearsals have begun. This means for the next two months, we’ll be makin’ art with some of Austin’s most creative folks. Jealous? You should be. These thirteen actors are incredible. I know that word gets thrown around a lot these days, but we can prove it. Allow us to show you how unhyperbolic we can be. Funny? Check. Austin theater royalty? Check. Tragic? Check. Critically acclaimed? Check. Bendy? Check. Award winning? Check. Gorgeous? Check. And now, we can add exceptional visual artists to this list of talents. Since...

12,288

Tomorrow is the first read through of Deus Ex Machina, which means it’s been a long day of printing and assembling scripts for the team. This got us thinking, exactly how many variations of Deus are there? So we pulled out one of these and got to work. And what discovered is that math has a much leaner way of saying what our playwright took 224 pages to demonstrate: Deus has 12,288 potential variations. Don’t believe us – we’ll show you our work: 29 x 23 x 31 = 12,288. Next week, we’re going to ask this guy what...

Kind Words

We asked a couple of our colleagues (Beth Burns and Barbara Chisholm Faires) whom we’ve worked with, and who have been deeply involved with the development of Deus Ex Machina,  if they wouldn’t mind sharing thoughts about our past work or thoughts about the plans we’ve shared with them so that we could populate the “Testimonial” section of this site we are building. They both replied with humblingly-kind observations, which leaves us both breathless and eager to fulfill them: From Beth Burns: My prediction is...

A Night of Hackery

A Night of Hackery

Tonight I am working furiously with (the formidable programmer) Tim Thomas to finish out a prototype of data capture and visualization for real time voting, just in time for Sunday’s reading of Deus Ex Machina. We are using Twilio as our vote collection system for this prototype, and leveraging the base votr code built by a Twilio staff member. And customizing like mad to bring the data visualization into better shape, to eliminate extraneous elements, and making administration more clean, useful, verbose (where needful), and...
